Burn-Out – 3D Car Racing and Destruction

The Burn-Out video game series was notorious not just for racing but for the emphasis on total and utter destruction. It was a kind of demolition derby except instead of being in some open area where you all spiral around one another; there was also a race to the finish happening where extra points and perks were awarded for running your opponents off the road along the way. Back in college, before I could afford Cable or Satellite TV, I would spend hours playing with my roommates, quickly developing rivalries and making enemies out of friends.

In addition to the utter carnage one could unleash on an opponent, the Burn-Out games were also known for their accuracy in terms of how the different makes and models handled on the road, and all it took was an inexperienced driver with the wrong equipment on a hazardous map to ramp up the difficulty and the fun. That, in many ways, was the overall appeal of Burn-Out – the simplicity. It was about having fun and destroying your competition and while finesse might have helped you dance around the track, it was more about taking out opponents and driving cautiously on hazardous tracks with hazardous drivers.
